We ask Angelica de Vito, Talent Acquisition Manager at Between Research recruiters, what makes a graduate stand out for fashion brands.
You nailed it! You bagged that all-important first interview for your dream first job. Now all you have to do is stand out among a feverish group of potential candidates all vying for the same thing. As the fashion industry becomes more competitive by the day, we asked fashion head hunter Angelica de Vito for her top tips to stand out among other applicants.

Show your specialism
“Really know yourself and the thing you like the most”, says de Vito. “Everyone wants to be a womenswear designer, but within a fashion brand there is various other possibilities.” If you can really understand what your strengths are, then specialise in that category - do the post-grad training, the Masters or the work experience. Show the recruiter you are serious about a particular area, and they will be impressed by your career vision.
2. Be curious
We don’t just mean asking the interviewer a question (which is a must - and make sure you’ve done your research first). We also mean to show your curiosity and thirst for fashion and creativity. That means, seeing the latest exhibitions, watching the runway shows online and reading the magazines. Absorb culture and inspiration around you and you’ll wow them with a genuine passion.
3. Think beyond Fashion
Some of the biggest issues and opportunities for brands right now come from outside of the fashion bubble, so it pays to understand other topics. “Sustainability and the revolution it brings to brands and the supply chain”, is one major theme to prep says de Vito. “Another big topic is digitalisation and the impact of Artificial Intelligence. These two big topics should be taken into consideration no matter what category you want to work in” explains de Vito.

4. Do the research
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. If you know the brand inside out, you’ve jumped the first hurdle. Follow them on socials, read their site and KNOW their product. Know what's next for them and what's in the news. And remember to ask those insightful questions about your possible future workplace. “It is important to understand what your authentic interests are in order to know what you want in an employee and career path.” So if diversity and inclusion, or work flexibility are important to you - now is the time to ask if the company culture fits yours.
5. Embrace your soft skills
More than ever, employees want to see ‘soft skills’, says de Vito. It’s not just about technical skills in design or product development, but modern-thinking employees want to see you are also adept in holistic skills such as positive growth mindset and collaboration. So make sure you highlight any training you have done in this area just as much as your practical expertise.
6. Remember first impressions
Whether on Zoom or in person. It's time to stand up straight, relax your shoulders, make eye contact and dress to impress. This is where you want to stand out and if that means breaking down your usual imposter system - do it. But remember - always be yourself. Wear something smart, stylish but comfortable that makes you feel good, rather than deciding to try out that avant-garde two-piece and giant heels that have never made it out of your wardrobe.
7. Follow up
It pays to follow up with a thank-you email reiterating your interest in the role and your appreciation of their time. This will keep you first and foremost in the interviewer’s mind and create that all-important lasting impression. If you’re talking to a recruiter, bear in mind this is the start of a long-term relationship that will last you your career - so start building that connection early!
